Enhancing Working Conditions in Bangladesh’s Garment Sector: A Holistic Approach to Social Dialogue, Gender Equality, and Climate Resilience

The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Bangladesh is implementing a comprehensive programme aimed at improving working conditions in the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector. This initiative focuses on three key thematic components:

1. Increased Capacity for Social Dialogue: Strengthening communication channels between workers and management to foster mutual understanding and collaboration.

2. Gender-Sensitive Workplaces: Promoting gender equality through targeted interventions that address workplace dynamics and support women’s empowerment.

3. Occupational Health and Safety / COVID-19 Response: Enhancing health and safety standards, with a particular emphasis on adapting to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Five-Axis Transformation through the ETI Bangladesh Programme

1. Data: The programme collects and analyses data on workplace conditions, gender dynamics, and health and safety standards to inform interventions and track progress.

2. Capacity Building / Technical Assistance: Providing training and resources to both workers and management to improve social dialogue, promote gender sensitivity, and enhance health and safety practices.

3. Technology / Machinery: Introducing technologies that support safer and more efficient working environments, particularly in response to COVID-19-related challenges.

4. Finance: Facilitating access to financial resources for implementing improvements in workplace conditions and supporting sustainable practices.

5. Policy: Advocating for policies that support the rights of workers, promote gender equality, and ensure occupational health and safety, influencing both factory-level practices and broader industry standards.

Strategic Impact & Value Proposition

1. Improved Worker Well-being: By addressing key areas such as social dialogue, gender equality, and health and safety, the programme contributes to a more supportive and equitable work environment.

2. Enhanced Productivity: A motivated and stable workforce, equipped with better skills and a stronger voice, leads to improved productivity and business outcomes.

3. Sustainable Industry Practices: The focus on long-term, inclusive, and sustainable practices ensures that improvements are not only beneficial in the short term but also contribute to the ongoing development of the RMG sector.
