Empowering Women in Bangladesh’s Garment Sector: The GEAR Programme

The Gender Equality and Returns (GEAR) Programme is an initiative aimed at enhancing career progression opportunities for women in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry. By providing targeted training in both soft and technical skills, the programme seeks to equip female workers with the necessary tools to advance into supervisory roles, thereby promoting gender equality and improving workplace dynamics.

Five-Axis Transformation via the GEAR Programme

1. Data: The programme collects and analyses data on the career progression of female workers, monitoring the impact of training on promotion rates and productivity.

2. Capacity Building / Technical Assistance: GEAR offers a comprehensive 10-day training programme that includes four days of soft skills development—covering topics such as leadership, communication, confidence building, and problem-solving—and six days of technical training focused on production line supervision, efficiency calculation, and work-study techniques.

3. Technology / Machinery: While the primary focus is on skill development, the programme also introduces participants to relevant technologies and machinery used in the RMG sector to enhance their technical proficiency.

4. Finance: By facilitating career advancement for women, the programme contributes to increased earnings and financial independence, thereby improving economic stability for participants and their families.

5. Policy: GEAR collaborates with factory management to foster a supportive environment for female supervisors, promoting policies that encourage gender equality and inclusive leadership within the workplace.

Strategic Impact & Value Proposition

Career Advancement: Since its inception, GEAR has trained over 800 female workers, with a significant number being promoted to supervisory positions, leading to increased representation of women in leadership roles within the RMG sector.

Productivity Gains: Factories that have implemented the GEAR programme have observed improvements in line efficiency, with trained supervisors contributing to enhanced productivity and operational performance.

Economic Empowerment: The programme has facilitated wage increases for female supervisors, thereby contributing to their economic empowerment and financial independence.

Industry Transformation: By promoting gender equality and empowering women in leadership roles, GEAR is fostering a more inclusive and equitable work environment, setting a precedent for other industries to follow.
