Better Mill Initiative – Bangladesh

The Better Mill Initiative (BMI) is a collaborative project aimed at addressing the environmental and occupational health challenges associated with wet processing units in Bangladesh’s textile and garment sector. The project focuses on improving the environmental performance of eight selected factories by promoting cleaner production practices that reduce the use of resources such as energy, water, and chemicals, and mitigate the generation of waste and hazardous effluents. Additionally, the initiative seeks to enhance the health and safety conditions of approximately 3,000 workers through targeted interventions and capacity-building activities.

Five‑Axis Transformation via Better Mill Initiative

Data: The project conducts baseline assessments using established frameworks such as FEM and Higg to evaluate the current environmental and occupational health status of participating factories.

Capacity Building / Technical Assistance: Tailored support is provided to factories, including workshops and expert guidance, to implement cleaner production practices and improve occupational health and safety measures.

Technology / Machinery: The initiative promotes the adoption of cleaner technologies and machinery that reduce environmental impact and enhance worker safety.

Finance: While direct financial support is not specified, the project facilitates access to resources and tools that enable factories to invest in sustainable practices and technologies.

Policy: The project engages with local stakeholders to develop recommendations for policy improvements that support environmental sustainability and occupational health in the textile sector.

Strategic Impact & Value Proposition

Environmental Sustainability: By implementing cleaner production practices, the initiative aims to reduce the environmental footprint of textile manufacturing, contributing to a more sustainable industry.

Improved Worker Health and Safety: The project enhances occupational health and safety conditions for workers, addressing issues such as exposure to hazardous chemicals and poor working environments.

Capacity Building: Through training and technical assistance, the initiative builds the capacity of factory management and workers to adopt and maintain sustainable practices.

Stakeholder Collaboration: The project fosters collaboration among brands, suppliers, and local stakeholders, promoting shared learning and the dissemination of best practices.

Scalability: The lessons learned from the initiative can be applied to other factories in Bangladesh and beyond, facilitating broader industry-wide improvements.
