ECO-BUILD: Advancing a Just Transition in Bangladesh’s Construction Sector

ECO-BUILD is a large-scale initiative implemented by GIZ and co-financed by the European Union to promote a sustainable and just transition within Bangladesh’s construction sector. The programme focuses on transforming the sector by strengthening institutional capacity, improving policy frameworks, and enabling market adoption of sustainable and inclusive practices. It addresses both environmental challenges—such as high emissions and resource use—and social dimensions, including decent work, gender inclusion, and equitable access to opportunities within the construction value chain.

Five-Axis Transformation via ECO-BUILD

Technology / Machinery

The programme encourages the adoption of sustainable construction practices and technologies, including resource-efficient materials, improved production methods and low-carbon building techniques. It supports demonstration and knowledge transfer to facilitate wider uptake across the industry.

Finance

ECO-BUILD contributes to developing market mechanisms and financial pathways that incentivise sustainable construction practices. By engaging private-sector actors and supporting business models for green materials and services, it helps unlock investment in environmentally friendly and socially inclusive construction solutions.

Policy

A central pillar of the initiative is strengthening policy and regulatory frameworks to support a just transition in construction. It works with government partners to develop standards, guidelines and governance mechanisms that promote sustainability, labour rights, gender equality and inclusive growth within the sector.
