Scaling-up Renewable Energy Project (Bangladesh)

The objective of the project is to significantly increase the installed generation capacity of renewable energy in Bangladesh, in order to meet rising electricity demand, improve energy access, and reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based generation. The project supports both large scale solar PV (including utility-scale and rooftop installations) and strengthens the market and regulatory frameworks. Key components include establishing a renewable energy financing facility, piloting new solar energy parks and rooftop projects, building institutional capacity, and enabling private sector participation in clean energy deployment.

Five-Axis Transformation via the Renewable Energy Project

Data: The project undertakes mapping and pipeline development of renewable energy project opportunities; energy demand forecasting; site identification; and emissions avoidance analysis to support investment planning and impact measurement.

Capacity Building / Technical Assistance: Support is provided to government bodies and sector institutions to develop capacity for project development, regulation, permitting, operation, and grid integration of renewables. Training and advisory services are offered to both public entities and private developers.

Technology / Machinery: The initiative enables deployment of solar PV technologies, including utility-scale and rooftop systems, along with related balance-of-system components. It supports technical assessments and vendor selection to ensure appropriate and efficient technology adoption.

Finance: A dedicated Renewable Energy Financing Facility is established to provide credit support to developers. The project provides concessional financing terms, and works to mobilise private sector investment alongside public finance to scale up deployment.

Policy: The project works on improving regulatory and policy frameworks, including net-metering, site allocation, permitting processes, grid interconnection rules, and facilitating renewable energy targets. It also helps build governance capacity for sustainable renewable energy deployment.

Strategic Impact & Value Proposition

Increased Renewable Capacity: The project will add up to ~310 MW of new renewable energy generation capacity, helping Bangladesh move toward cleaner energy mixes.

Emission Reductions: By replacing or reducing fossil-fuel based generation, the project helps avoid several hundred thousand tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.

Private Sector Mobilisation: The initiative leverages private investment by creating enabling conditions and financing instruments that reduce risk and improve returns for renewable energy developers.

Access to Cleaner Energy & Health Benefits: Expanding renewable energy improves access to cleaner electricity, reducing air pollution and associated health risks, especially in line with reducing burning of fossil fuels.

Policy & Market Transformation: The project strengthens institutional capacity, regulatory frameworks, and market capacity, enabling larger scale and more systematic deployment of renewables. This positions Bangladesh to better meet future energy demand in a sustainable way.
